It is not important that you share my personal opinion about HTML5 & CSS3: "Most of the mobile apps don't need native apps. They are cool, but to expensive to develop, test and maintain. Web applications are form the economic point of view in a lot of cases more reasonable."

Software developers are not carpenters: on "Why do web sites andsoftware take so long to build? And why is it so hard?"

This evening it happened to me to read this quite interesting article about why software is so hard to write. In the article, if you don't care or do not want to read it, the blogger reports the decision of a friend of his quitting his (probably highly paid) job as software developer because he got tired of it. The motivation he (the one who quit) suggested are that software is complex to build and is the only large-scale human artifact that is mostly built by hand

Application Development Glass Ceilings

Sometimes in app-dev we’re using technologies that have a delayed cost. Simple to use now, but with shortcomings that mean that later features might be much harder to add. The term ‘Glass Ceilings’ (whilst classically meaning something else) seems to apply here.

Quick evaluation of Twitter Bootstrap

must admit I suck at graphical design. It's one of the reasons that put me in the way of Flex and Vaadin in the first place: out-of-the-box, you got an application that is pleasing to the eye. Using one of these technologies is not possible (nor relevant) in all contexts, and since I've got a strong interest in UI, I regularly have a look at other alternatives for clean looking applications. The technology I studied this week is Twitter Bootstrap. Bootstrap is a lightweight client-side framework, that comes (among others) with pre-styled "components" and a standard layout. Both are completely configurable and you can download the customized result here. From a technical point of view, Bootstrap offers a CSS - and an optional JavaScript file that relies on jQuery (both are also available in minified flavor). I'm no big fan of fancy client-side JavaScript so what follows will be focused on what you can do with plain CSS.

Did Yahoo sow the seeds of its own demise with Hadoop?

Yahoo is famous for saying that Hadoop, the data-storage-and-processing platform it helped develop into a big data juggernaut, is “behind every click” on the site. But as the world once again starts analyzing Yahoo’s myriad woes after Sunday morning’s ouster of embattled CEO Scott Thompson, I’m left wondering if its investment in Hadoop didn’t aid in the company’s demise — even if it’s a way down the long list of Yahoo’s mistakes.
