KDE 4.8 is a fine release, and is moving well in the right direction. If I had to cite a specific reason to consider upgrading, it would be the incredible performance improvement. Even if you don’t turn on extra effects with the extra horsepower you save, you’ll just find the environment more “zippy” and pleasurable. It’s still not as quick as the lightweight desktop environments common to Linux, but with the features it boasts there’s no comparison. The reason you may reconsider upgrading would fault in dolphins annoying animation, which can’t be disabled unless you kill other minor effects. While KDE is no longer revolutionizing the desktop environment with each release, the polish and sheen the developers have put into the software is almost its own small revolution.
